Working alongside Terra Water, our effort focuses on providing and installing sustainable water filter systems to a number of schools in Sumba, ensuring access to safe drinking water for the children and staff.

The Water Crisis in Sumba: A Daily Struggle 

Sumba is an island of contrast—an untamed paradise rich in culture and natural beauty but shadowed by hardships, with access to clean water being one of the most pressing concerns. 

Most villagers rely on boiling water to make it safe for consumption. This process, while effective, is tiresome and takes up significant time—especially for families with limited resources. 

The dry season adds another layer of difficulty. Water becomes so scarce that locals, children included, need to walk several kilometres, sometimes twice a day, to collect water from remote sources. These long treks often force the kids to miss school, placing a burden on the younger generation. 

The implications of this struggle extend beyond inconvenience. Poor access to clean water adversely affects education, health, and overall quality of life.

The Birth of The Terra Water Project 

Our commitment to addressing Sumba’s water crisis began with the construction of water stations in nearby villages, providing easier access to potable water for hundreds of locals. 

This expanded to a partnership with Terra Water, an organisation renowned for its innovative water filtration systems in Indonesia. Our partnership ensures that local schools are integrated with clean and sustainable water using Terra Water’s innovative water filters system. 

How Terra Water Filters Are Changing Lives 

The Terra Water filters installed in these schools eliminate the need for manually boiled water, a practice that consumes time and energy. By providing instant access to clean, purified water, they drastically reduce the risk of waterborne illnesses, creating a healthier school environment. 

Crucially, these filters also ensure children are able to focus on their education. No longer required to fetch water during school hours, they can now prioritise their studies. 

To date, we’ve successfully installed 50 water filters across 8 schools in Sumba. Each installation transforms one school location, ensuring clean drinking water is no longer a privilege but a basic right for hundreds of students and teachers.
